Filling In the Blanks
Tonight I spent several hours researching the nearly 200 Philippine dialects, sociolinguistics, and topography. I read a fascinating document entitled "Coconut Cultivation Among the Yakan" (http://www.sil.org/asia/philippines/sipl/SIPL_1-2_063-072.pdf). Wonder what led me there? An acquaintance of forty years wrote in a blog about a dam in the Philippines with which I was unfamiliar.
As I began looking for it, the map led me to two nearby islands, Balisin and Sacol, both of which I spent varying amounts of time on in my past. I started a linguistic study and small dictionary of the Yakan language. It was on Sacol Island I began what would span many continents and grow to about 1,000 hours of research in pharmacognosy. I completed my first genealogical study, identifying linkages of many of the families on Sacol.
On Balisin, I was the designated assistant director of a summer camp that included learning survival skills such as trapping island rodents for dinner and locating water in the Traveler's plant. Tonight I looked back in awe for the privilege of having been able to engage in this and many other unique opportunities to indulge my eclectic interests and voracious appetite for learning and embracing anything that brushed my life.
Research is my great love. My hope has long been to meet a patron who would financially support me as the ancient artists, musicians, and other creative folks were supported. Alas, that is not to be, however, I found I love even more doing the research for clients. I have researched and written grants. I have researched with and supported M.Div. and Ph.D. students. I have drafted plans for an ocean reading room for elementary school children, facilitated development of non-profit organizations from the ground up, and written newsletters for business across the U.S.
Tied closely to research is wordsmithing. They are inextricably interlinked. The newsletters and publications. The grants and webpage development. Creating family histories and teaching college-level composition and literary analysis skills. Writing fiction and non-fiction works. Words tumble out with a life of their own and celebrate their freedom when turned loose.
Please take time to browse this website and all it offers. I am excited to offer you my services and look forward to meeting you soon!
